Businesses, property owners are suffering heavy losses

Joel Christian is still paying his tab for the scrap metal boom.

The bill is about $200,000 so far for his family-owned business, FM Machine Co. in Akron.

Late last fall, someone broke into the Triplett Boulevard business and made off with drawers full of carbide tooling inserts.

To the average person, the theft doesn’t sound startling.

To the scrap-scarfing thief, it was a good heist, netting about $1,000.
