Theft spikes tied to poor economy

MARDELA SPRINGS — More adults with no criminal history are stealing scrap metal and gasoline when faced with economic hardships in Wicomico County, Sheriff Mike Lewis said.

Aiming to make a quick buck, thieves are redeeming pirated metals at recycling centers, which are overwhelmed daily by complaints from the materials’ former owners, according to Greg Stein, president of Delmarva Recycling Inc. in Salisbury.
